Who We Are
Welcome to our website. We hope you find it informative, and we look forward to hearing from you, or seeing you in person! We pride ourselves on Respect, Integrity, and Cooperation ("the action or process of working together to the same end").
After graduating from RMIT Chiropractic in Melbourne 1993, and working in Australia for a few years, Stephen moved back home to NZ and purchased Dannevirke Chiropractic in 1996. He loves helping people back to better health and everday function, as well as sporting performance. Stephen is married to Marie - they have four children & 11 grandchildren. In his spare time Stephen tries to keep fit, rides a motorbike, takes photos, and is involved with church activities.
Colleen Genet is our awesome full-time assistant and handles office & reception. Although being bought up Pongaroa way, she seems to know almost everyone who comes in. Colleen was with Dannevirke Woolspinners and has been with us since 2012. Married to Pete (Scanpower), they have two children and 3 grandies.
Dannevirke Chiropractic itself was opened by ex-All Black John Loveday in the mid-70's, then it went to Gary Rixon, then to Stephen in 1996 - so that's 45 years of continuous service now .
Some people ask how I got into chiropractic. Well, initially I was in the army for a bit, then became a prosthetist, making and fitting artificial arms at the Auckland Limb Centre. Then, while training for triathlons, I had a chronic knee injury that wouldn't respond to medicine, acupuncture, cortisone injections, physio, and so my Mum & Auntie suggested I see their chiropractor in Rotorua. First day I went, the chiropractor didn't even look at my sore knee, just took X-rays and checked my spine. Interesting... Next visit, began the process of realigning a twisted pelvis and adjusting other vertebra that were compensating. Presto! I was able to run again, and was hooked on this new (for me) method of health care. I will always be grateful to John Funnell in Rotorua for that, and for encouraging me to become a chiropractor, and allowing me to follow him around a bit to see how he did things. Before I knew it, I was on my way to Melbourne to study chiropractic for 5 years, and that was that! This was 1988. Today, there is a wonderful chiropractic college in Auckland (see the link) - highly rated as one of the best in the world, so if you are interested in this exciting profession, check it out! :)
